When ordering firewood online, it can be difficult to visualise exactly how much wood you are actually getting. Is a "large crate" better value than a pallet of bags? How many fires will a 60-litre net last?
At Dawsons Fuels, we want to make buying logs simple. To help you choose the right amount for your needs, we have created this guide comparing our most popular kiln dried log products. We’ve ranked them from the smallest "tester" packs to our largest "winter stockpile" crates, explaining the loose volume equivalent so you can make a fair comparison.
Here is your essential guide to log volumes.
Quick Comparison Table
For those in a hurry, here is how our firewood volumes stack up.

1. The "Weekend Warmer"
Product: 60 Litre Boot Bag of Kiln Dried Birch
-
Volume: 60 Litres
-
Ideal For: Occasional fires, camping, or first-time buyers.
Think of this as your "grab-and-go" option. It fits easily in a car boot (hence the name!) and is the perfect way to test the quality of our kiln dried birch before committing to a bulk order. If you have limited storage space or only light the fire for special occasions, this single bag is the hassle-free choice.
2. The "Convenient Carry" Pallet
Product: 64 x 22 Litre Carry Bags (Birch)
-
Total Loose Volume: Approx. 1,408 Litres
-
Ideal For: Elderly customers or homes with narrow access.
This pallet offers a substantial amount of wood—over 1.4 cubic metres—but it is split into 64 lightweight, manageable bags. If you need to carry logs through a narrow terraced house, down a garden path, or simply want to avoid heavy lifting, these 22-litre handy bags are the ultimate convenience.
3. The "Bulk Boot" Pallet
Product: 24 x 60 Litre Boot Bags (Birch)
-
Total Loose Volume: 1,440 Litres
-
Ideal For: Minimising trips to the log store.
This option provides a very similar total volume to the "Convenient Carry" pallet above, but in fewer, larger bags. Instead of 64 small bags, you receive 24 large "boot bags." If you have the strength to move larger bags and prefer a tidier shed with less plastic waste, this is an excellent middle-ground solution.
4. The "High-Heat" Hornbeam Nets
Product: 42 x 40 Litre Nets of Hornbeam
-
Total Loose Volume: 1,680 Litres
-
Ideal For: Maximum heat efficiency and long burns.
Stepping up in size, this pallet gives you nearly 1,700 litres of loose logs. The key difference here is the wood species: Hornbeam. Hornbeam is a denser hardwood than Birch, meaning it burns slower and significantly hotter. If your priority is heat output for the coldest winter nights, these nets are a top contender.
5. The "Dense Stack" Medium Crate
Product: Medium Sized Crate of Kiln Dried Birch
-
Loose Volume Equivalent: Approx. 1,676 Litres
-
Ideal For: Maximising wood volume in a small footprint.
A Note on Stacked vs. Loose Volume:
Don't let your eyes deceive you! A crate often looks physically smaller than a pallet of bags, but this is because the logs are hand-stacked tightly with minimal air gaps. While the physical dimensions are compact, a Medium Crate contains roughly the same amount of actual wood as the 42 nets of Hornbeam mentioned above. It is the neatest way to store a large volume of fuel.
6. The "Winter Stockpile" Large Crate
Product: Large Crate of Kiln Dried Birch (4 Rows Deep)
-
Loose Volume Equivalent: Approx. 2,130 Litres
-
Ideal For: Daily burners and best overall value.
This is our largest option. Packed four rows deep, this crate contains the equivalent of over 2.1 cubic metres of loose logs. If you use your wood burner daily as a primary heat source, buying in bulk like this offers the best price per log and ensures you won't run out when the temperature drops.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Which is better: Crated logs or logs in nets?
Crates are generally better if you want the most wood in the smallest footprint, as they are hand-stacked to remove air gaps. Nets are better if you need to manually carry the logs from your driveway to a storage area (e.g. through a house or side gate).
What is the difference between Birch and Hornbeam?
Birch is a "bright" burning wood; it lights easily, looks beautiful, and heats up a room quickly. Hornbeam is a denser, heavier wood that burns for longer and hotter, making it ideal for overnight burns or very cold evenings.
How do you calculate loose volume?
Industry standards suggest that 1 cubic metre of tightly stacked logs is roughly equivalent to 1.5 to 1.7 cubic metres of loose-filled logs. We use these conversions to help you compare our crates against our bags fairly.
