Why choose kiln-dried birch logs?

Silver birch is an easy-lighting hardwood that produces a bright, lively flame and fast, responsive heat. It is particularly useful when you want to establish a fire quickly or warm a room without waiting for denser logs to catch.

Birch logs are a good choice for:

• Shorter fires where a very slow burn is not required

Birch is less dense than woods such as ash and oak, so it burns more quickly and may need topping up more often. This is also what makes birch responsive, easy to light and straightforward to control.

How much wood is in the crate?

This medium crate contains approximately 1.20m³ of hand-stacked kiln-dried birch logs.

Hand-stacking reduces the empty spaces between the logs and makes efficient use of the available crate volume. This means a stacked crate contains more actual firewood than the same volume of loosely tipped logs.

Once the logs are removed from the crate and tipped into a loose pile, they are equivalent to approximately 1.7m³ of loose firewood, or roughly three of our standard tote bags.

The loose-volume and tote-bag figures are approximate comparisons. Logs are a natural product and vary in shape and thickness, while the amount of air between loose logs depends on how they fall and settle.

The complete crate measures approximately 120cm high × 118cm wide × 85cm deep, allowing you to check that you have sufficient storage space before ordering.

Why are kiln-dried logs sold by volume rather than weight?

Firewood is normally sold by volume because its weight varies according to its moisture content. Freshly cut or poorly seasoned wood weighs more because it contains more water, not because it contains more usable fuel.

Comparing stacked or loose volume therefore provides a more meaningful indication of the quantity of properly dried firewood you will receive.

This listing contains kiln-dried logs only. Kindling and firelighters are not included. A separate crate-and-kindling option is available for customers who would like kindling included with their order.

Once empty, the wooden crate can be carefully broken down and used as kindling. Take suitable care when removing and handling nails, staples or other metal fixings.

Ready to Burn kiln-dried firewood

These birch logs are certified under the Ready to Burn scheme using certificate number WS234/00001.

The logs typically measure below 20% moisture and are ready to use without further seasoning, provided they are kept properly stored and protected from rain after delivery.

Burning properly dried firewood helps your appliance operate more efficiently and produces a cleaner, more reliable fire than burning wet or unseasoned wood.

The kilns used to dry the logs are fired using offcuts and waste wood from the production process, making practical use of material that might otherwise go unused.

Should you choose birch or ash logs?

Choose birch if your priorities are easy lighting, fast heat and an attractive flame.

For a steadier fire that generally lasts longer between refuelling, consider a medium crate of kiln-dried ash logs.

How to store your birch logs

Keep your kiln-dried logs somewhere covered, dry and well ventilated after delivery. Logs that are left exposed to rain or stored in a damp, enclosed space can absorb moisture again.

For best results:

• Store the logs under cover
• Keep them raised above wet ground
• Allow air to circulate around the logs
• Avoid wrapping them completely in non-breathable plastic
• Protect them from driving rain
• Only bring a manageable quantity indoors at a time

Free standard delivery is included to most UK postcodes. Enter your postcode during checkout to confirm availability and view any regional delivery surcharge before payment.

National orders are normally delivered on a pallet to the kerbside or nearest safe and accessible point. The driver will use a pallet truck, which requires a firm, flat and level surface such as concrete or tarmac.

Pallet trucks cannot normally operate safely on:

• Grass or soft ground
• Loose gravel
• Steps or raised thresholds
• Steep slopes
• Uneven or damaged surfaces

We also provide local delivery using our own vehicles in parts of South Cumbria, North Lancashire and North Yorkshire.

Collection is available from our depot in Sedbergh.
