Why choose kiln-dried ash logs?

Ash is widely regarded as an excellent all-round firewood. It combines relatively easy lighting with strong heat output and a steady burn, making it particularly well suited to regular use in wood-burning stoves.

Ash logs are a good choice for:

Ash is denser than birch and therefore generally burns for longer. It is not quite as quick to catch as birch, but properly kiln-dried ash still lights readily when used with suitable kindling and firelighters.

Its combination of heat, burn duration and ease of use makes ash one of the most versatile choices for domestic wood burning.

How much wood is in the crate?

This medium crate contains approximately 1.20m³ of hand-stacked kiln-dried ash logs.

Hand-stacking reduces the empty spaces between the logs and makes efficient use of the crate. A hand-stacked crate therefore contains more actual firewood than the same measured volume of loosely tipped logs.

Once removed from the crate and tipped into a loose pile, the logs are equivalent to approximately 1.7m³ of loose firewood, or roughly three of our standard tote bags.

The loose-volume and tote-bag figures are approximate comparisons. Firewood is a natural product and individual logs vary in shape and thickness. The amount of air between loose logs also changes according to how they fall and settle.

The complete crate measures approximately 120cm high × 118cm wide × 85cm deep, allowing you to check your available storage space before ordering.

Why are kiln-dried logs sold by volume rather than weight?

Firewood is normally sold by volume because its weight varies significantly according to moisture content.

Freshly cut or poorly seasoned wood weighs more because it contains more water, not because it provides more usable fuel. Properly kiln-dried logs will naturally weigh less than an equivalent volume of wet firewood.

Comparing stacked or loose volume therefore gives customers a more meaningful indication of the quantity of properly dried logs they will receive.

This listing contains kiln-dried logs only. Kindling and firelighters are not included. A separate crate-and-kindling option is available for customers who would like kindling supplied with their logs.

Once empty, the wooden crate can be carefully broken down and used as kindling. Take appropriate care when removing and handling nails, staples and other metal fixings.

Ready to Burn kiln-dried ash firewood

These ash logs are certified under the Ready to Burn scheme using certificate number WS234/00001.

The logs typically measure below 20% moisture and are ready to use without further seasoning, provided they remain properly stored and protected from rain after delivery.

Burning properly dried firewood helps your appliance operate more efficiently and produces a cleaner, more reliable fire than burning wet or insufficiently seasoned logs.

Always operate your stove or fireplace in accordance with the appliance manufacturer’s instructions and have your chimney or flue maintained regularly by a suitably qualified professional.

Should you choose ash, birch or oak logs?

Choose ash if you want a reliable all-round firewood that provides strong heat, a steady flame and a good burn duration.

How to store your ash logs

Keep your kiln-dried logs somewhere covered, dry and well ventilated after delivery. Logs that are exposed to rain or stored in a damp, enclosed space can absorb moisture again.

For best results:

• Store the logs under cover
• Keep them raised above wet ground
• Allow air to circulate around the logs
• Protect them from driving rain
• Avoid completely wrapping them in non-breathable plastic
• Only bring a manageable quantity indoors at a time

National orders are normally delivered on a pallet to the kerbside or nearest safe and accessible point. The driver will use a pallet truck, which requires a firm, flat and level surface such as concrete or tarmac.

Pallet trucks cannot normally operate safely on:

• Grass or soft ground
• Loose gravel
• Steps or raised thresholds
• Steep slopes
• Uneven or damaged surfaces

We also provide local delivery using our own vehicles in parts of South Cumbria, North Lancashire and North Yorkshire.

Collection is available from our depot in Sedbergh.
