The four kindling nets are secured on top of the crate and wrapped together for transport, so the complete bundle arrives as one palletised delivery.

Long-burning ash logs with softwood kindling

Ash is an excellent all-round firewood. It combines relatively easy lighting with strong heat output and a steady burn, making it particularly well suited to regular use in wood-burning stoves.

Ash is denser than birch and generally burns for longer, reducing how frequently the fire needs to be refuelled. Properly dried ash still lights readily when used with suitable kindling and firelighters.

The included softwood kindling is cut into sticks of approximately 12cm. Softwood catches readily because of its lower density, helping create a strong flame before the larger ash logs are added.

How to light your fire

1. Place one or two suitable firelighters in the firebox.
2. Arrange several pieces of dry kindling around or above them, leaving room for airflow.
3. Light the firelighters and allow the kindling to catch properly.
4. Add one or two ash logs once the kindling is burning strongly.
5. Add further logs gradually as the fire becomes established.

Always follow the lighting and operating instructions supplied by the manufacturer of your stove or appliance.

How much wood is in the crate?

The crate contains approximately 1.20m³ of hand-stacked kiln-dried ash logs. The four nets of kindling are supplied in addition to this log volume.

Hand-stacking reduces the empty spaces between individual logs and makes efficient use of the crate. A hand-stacked crate therefore contains more actual firewood than the same measured volume of loosely tipped logs.

Once removed from the crate and tipped into a loose pile, the ash logs are equivalent to approximately 1.7m³ of loose firewood, or roughly three of our standard tote bags.

The loose-volume and tote-bag figures are approximate comparisons. Firewood is a natural product and individual logs vary in shape and thickness. The amount of air between loose logs also changes according to how they fall and settle.

The wooden crate measures approximately 120cm high × 118cm wide × 85cm deep. The four kindling nets are placed on top for delivery, so allow additional overall height when considering storage and unloading space.

Why are kiln-dried logs sold by volume rather than weight?

Firewood is normally sold by volume because its weight varies significantly according to moisture content.

Freshly cut or insufficiently seasoned wood weighs more because it contains more water, not because it provides more usable fuel. Properly kiln-dried logs naturally weigh less than an equivalent volume of wet firewood.

Comparing stacked or loose volume therefore gives a more meaningful indication of the quantity of properly dried logs supplied.

• Approximately 1.20m³ stacked log volume
• Four 40-litre nets of dry softwood kindling
• Approximately 25cm split ash logs
• Approximately 12cm kindling sticks

Firelighters are not included. The bundle contains kiln-dried ash logs and four nets of dry kindling only.

Once empty, the wooden crate can be carefully broken down and used as additional kindling. Take appropriate care when removing and handling nails, staples or other metal fixings.

Ready to Burn logs and kindling

The ash logs and softwood kindling are certified under the Ready to Burn scheme using certificate number WS234/00001.

Both products typically measure below 20% moisture and are ready to use, provided they remain properly stored and protected from rain after delivery.

The ash logs are kiln-dried. The included softwood kindling is dry, Ready to Burn certified and typically below 20% moisture.

Burning properly dried fuel helps your appliance operate more efficiently and produces a cleaner, more dependable fire than wet or insufficiently seasoned wood.

How to store the logs and kindling

Keep both the logs and kindling somewhere covered, dry and well ventilated after delivery. They can absorb moisture again if exposed to rain or stored in a damp, enclosed space.

For best results:

• Move the kindling nets under cover promptly after delivery
• Store the logs and kindling above wet ground
• Allow air to circulate around the fuel
• Protect everything from rain and damp
• Avoid completely wrapping the logs in non-breathable plastic
• Only bring a manageable quantity indoors at a time

The four kindling nets are placed on top of the wooden crate and the complete bundle is wrapped together for transport.

National orders are normally delivered on a pallet to the kerbside or nearest safe and accessible point. The driver will use a pallet truck, which requires a firm, flat and level surface such as concrete or tarmac.

Pallet trucks cannot normally operate safely on:

• Grass or soft ground
• Loose gravel
• Steps or raised thresholds
• Steep slopes
• Uneven or damaged surfaces

We also provide local delivery using our own vehicles in parts of South Cumbria, North Lancashire and North Yorkshire.

Collection is available from our depot in Sedbergh.
